Winter Sun Golf Holidays

Winter Sun Golf Holidays

When the days grow shorter and colder, a golf & spa escape in the sun is the perfect antidote. Our winter sun resorts offer warm climates, championship courses, and luxurious spas that let you swap grey skies for blue horizons and long days on the fairways.

Handpicked for year-round sunshine, these destinations give you the chance to play world-class golf, unwind by the pool or in the spa, and enjoy the simple pleasure of dining al fresco even in the depths of winter. It's the ideal way to keep your swing sharp and your spirits high until spring returns.

Why Winter Is the Right Time to Go

The counter-intuitive truth about winter golf travel is that January and February are often better months to visit warm-weather destinations than July and August. The Canary Islands in midwinter are cooler, less crowded and frequently cheaper than in summer, while the golf conditions are excellent — firm fairways, green courses and the ideal temperature range for comfortable play. Morocco in December is mild and dry in the south, with dramatic light and tourist sites that are far less busy than at peak season.

The other argument for winter travel is straightforward: when it's grey, wet and cold at home and the courses are either closed or in poor condition, a week of sunshine, championship golf and a proper spa does more for morale than the same week in summer. The contrast alone makes it worth it. Our winter sun resorts are specifically chosen for their year-round quality — not destinations that work in summer and tolerate winter, but places where the winter window is genuinely among the best times to visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I play golf in the sun in January or February?
The Canary Islands (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura) are the closest and most reliable option — under four hours from the UK, 20–24°C throughout January and February, and courses in excellent condition year-round. Morocco (Marrakech, the Atlantic coast) is another strong choice: mild temperatures, zero rainfall at peak winter and some of the most dramatic golf settings in the world. For true winter warmth, Mauritius (Indian Ocean) and Mexico (Caribbean) are in their dry seasons from November to April — further to travel, but genuinely exceptional.
What makes the Canary Islands the top winter golf destination?
Consistency. The Canaries sit at latitude 28° North with the Atlantic trade winds moderating the heat — the result is that daytime temperatures of 20–24°C and reliable sunshine are the year-round norm, including in the depths of winter. Courses are green and in good condition even in January because the volcanic soil retains moisture well. The flight is under four hours from the UK, direct services operate from most major airports, and accommodation costs significantly less in the winter months than in summer.
Is Morocco warm enough for winter golf?
Yes — particularly the Atlantic coast (Marrakech and the surrounding region) and the north (Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay). Marrakech in December to February sits at 16–20°C during the day — cool enough for comfortable golf but warm in the sun. Rainfall is rare in winter in the south. The Middle Atlas (Michlifen) is cooler and can be cold at night at 1,665m altitude, which is part of what makes it distinctive — the crisp mountain air and fireside evenings are features, not bugs.
How far in advance should I book a winter sun golf holiday?
The Canaries and Morocco book up quickly from October onwards for January–March — the best room categories and tee times at popular resorts go early. For peak weeks (school holiday periods and bank holidays in particular), six months ahead is not too early. For long-haul (Mauritius, Mexico), 3–4 months is usually sufficient outside of Christmas and New Year, which should be booked as early as possible. Contact us with your preferred dates and we'll advise on availability.
Are winter golf holidays good value compared to summer?
Generally, yes — particularly in the Canary Islands and Morocco where summer is not the peak travel season. Room rates and packages at several of our partner resorts are lower in January and February than in July and August, and the courses are no worse (in many cases the conditions are better). The exception is Christmas and New Year, which command peak pricing everywhere. January and February are typically the best value months for warm-weather golf in Europe.
